  WILSON ATHLETICS WEEKLY
Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.”-Pele

Greetings Sports Fans!

We had all sorts of great sporting events this past week to be proud of for our Athletic Programs and student body. The Unified Soccer Team battled it out against West Linn and Grant in two very exciting matches. Our Volleyball Program had two dominating matches against Benson and Cleveland. The Football Program played in an extremely exciting game out at St. Helens. Our Soccer Programs finished off their pre-season schedules and they march into league play starting this week. And the Cross Country Program had a terrific showing at the Meriwether Invitational on Friday Night. I can’t say enough about the hard work, dedication, and commitment by our student-athletes, coaches, and community of teachers as they continually strive to make Wilson an amazing place to be! We March On!

We have close to 400 student-athletes this Fall playing a sport for Wilson High School. That is truly remarkable and exciting to see that many kids out for a sport and I cannot stress the benefits of a co-curricular activity like sports can have for our student body population. Sports can be a vehicle for so many life lessons regarding leadership, building community, and learning how hard work and dedication can pay off. The following links are reminders of how important Interscholastic Sports are for student-athletes.

The following link is something I shared with the Wilson Athletic Leadership Council last year. It was a hit with the group and a reminder about the power of positivity.

We will using tools from the Positive Coaching Alliance and resources from Jeff Jannsen’s work on leadership as well.

A message from the Booster Club-

Volunteer for concessions today!
The Wilson Booster Club manages concession sales at games. All profits are returned to Wilson clubs and sports. In order to offer concessions, volunteers are needed to prepare and sell hot dogs, popcorn, etc.  Sign up to help today at http://signup.com/go/VJ19f3.  No experience necessary!  If you are new to concession volunteering you'll be trained when you arrive. This is a fun way to give back to the Wilson community.

Wilson Athletics

The Week in Review-

Our Volleyball Program had another strong week of league play. They traveled to Jefferson on Tuesday and swept the Demos with all three levels winning their matches. On Thursday, we hosted Cleveland and what a night it was! Both the JV and JV2 won their matches in exciting fashion winning 3 sets to 2 and the Varsity swept 3-0 in front of a great crowd of parents, youth players, and our own Wilson Student Body. They travel to Benson on Tuesday and host Grant on Thursday. We March On!

The Football Program had a big week this week. The JV2 Team took on Forest Grove on Monday night in a tough contest. The team played well but couldn’t pull out a victory. They will host St. Helens tomorrow with a 4pm kick-off. The Varsity traveled to St. Helens on Friday night and played in an exciting game. Our squad battled back from being down two scores to go up 35-34 with a little over a minute left thanks to a great on-side kick. Unfortunately, St. Helens made a couple of big plays and was able to pull out a victory. It was an exciting night of football and it is just unfortunate that someone had to lose that game. We host Hillsboro on Friday with a 7pm kick off.

The Cross Country Program traveled to Meriwether on Friday for a meet with over 40 teams racing. The Program had another strong showing with the JV Men and Women Runners finishing 3rd overall. The Men’s Varsity Runners finished 4th overall and the Women finished 2nd overall! The Cross Country Coaches continue to build a competitive and balanced program! We have two meets this week when we host on Wednesday at Gabriel Park and then travel to Portland Meadows for the Nike Invitational on Saturday. We March On!

The Unified Soccer Program took on West Linn and Grant this past week. In both contests, our team won 6-5. A huge thanks goes out to Coach Danny Bradach and Coach Monica Holzmer for organizing and coaching the team this year. It was awesome to watch them play against Grant on Friday in the stadium. And a big thanks to Kaden Leeper for officiating the contest as well!

The Men’s Soccer Program had a strong final week of pre-season play as we hosted Centennial and Canby this past week. We had a hard time finding the net on Tuesday against Centennial and lost 2-1 but on Thursday, the team was able to score 3 goals in the win against Canby. The JV Team has had an incredible run during the pre-season going undefeated and scoring 24 goals while only giving up 3! Coach Lomanto credits their team success to the hard work and commitment they have given all year and three players in particular are having great years, Alex Monteiro is their leading scorer, Alex Martins has been instrumental, and Anton Envoldson has been a strong defender! We March On!

The Women’s Soccer Program wrapped up their tough pre-season schedule with an away game at Westview on Monday. The Varsity came up just short in their efforts and have had some really close contests this year so far in their preseason schedule. They are looking to make a statement in league play when we host Cleveland and Grant this week.
