Greetings Sports Fans!
Week one is under our belts and what a week it was! A huge thanks goes out to our coaches for modifying some of their workouts this week as we waited for the smoke to lift. And thank you parents for being flexible as well. It was a challenging week to say the least but I think overall we managed well.
We will be having our Fall Sports Kick-Off Night on August 21st starting in the Wilson Auditorium at 6pm. There will be opening remarks by myself and Principal Chatard and then the Fall Programs and Coaches will have their Parent Meetings to go over the season. It is expected that all parents, coaches, and student-athletes attend at 6pm. The Booster Club will be at the event early selling gear. So come early so you can get all your Wilson swag for the new school year!
Speaking of Boosters, if you are looking for volunteer opportunities or to become a new member, the Wilson Booster Club is always looking for both. Visit the following link for more information.http://www.wilsonboosterclub.com
Our fall programs will start to compete next week. Kind of hard to believe it is here already. With that being said, it is important to remember that participating in athletics has so many benefits including how to work as a team, fostering leadership skills, and learning how to grow and learn from making mistakes. The following link from the Positive Coaching Alliance about creating a mistake ritual and how it can help you grow as a student-athlete is a valuable tool. https://d3kv8ayplk3lle.cloudfront.net/sites/uploads/files/EYG_1_4.pdf
All of the Fall Schedules have been posted on the OSAA website, www.osaa.org You can also visit our website www.wilsonathletics.com for all things Wilson and live updates.
Leanne Van Horne and I are hosting a Brats and Brews Party as a fundraiser for Wilson Athletics and kick off the new school year at her house on August 25th at 6pm. Ticket are $50.00. There will be games, good food, and great company! If you are interested, please email Leanne or myself to reserve a spot.
The Cross Country Program will be traveling to Wilsonville on Friday for its first meet of the year. The XC Coaching staff continues to build and inclusive program that is becoming more and more competitive each year. With a new crop of runners and some seasoned returners, they should make a run at a City Title.
Coach Kilpatrick-White is in his second year at the helm of the Football Program and with a new hybrid football league, the program is looking to make a statement this season. They are bringing back a solid nucleus of players from last years’ squad and eager group of fresh faces. They will be traveling to the Marshall Campus on Friday for the PIL Jamboree. Schedule is TBA.
Coach Mendak and his staff are looking to build upon their foundation from year one. He and his staff have created a well-rounded program that is becoming more competitive and inclusive. They are looking to battle it out with perennial power Lincoln for a PIL City Title this year and with a strong returning class and a solid group of younger players, they are poised to compete! The Varsity will be traveling to Oregon City on Thursday for a Jamboree.
The Women’s Soccer Program is positioning themselves to make a run at the PIL Championship this year. Coach Bundy and his staff have done an outstanding job of creating a culture of accountability, inclusiveness, and competitiveness. They are looking to build upon their successes from last year and make run in the playoffs this year. The Varsity will be traveling to Grant Pass on Saturday for their first match of the season.
The Men’s Soccer Program is looking to make a run at the City Title this year. They lost a solid nucleus of Seniors from last year but have a very strong group of returners and incoming freshmen. Coach Mathews and his staff continue to build a program that is competitive, fun, and welcomes all. They will be traveling with the Women’s Soccer Program on Saturday for their first match of the year.
Finally, we are super excited about the direction of the Cheer and Dance programs. Both Coach Boole and Coach Soppe-Navetta bring a wealth of experience and they are creating a program that is combining elements of both Cheer and Dance to get us hyped for the 2018 Season. Super excited to see their programs grow!
