Greetings Sports Fans!

“One person can be a crucial ingredient on a team, but one person cannot make a team.”

 –Karem Abul-Jabbbar

I thought Kareem’s quote about team work was a perfect intro this week after witnessing our spring student-athletes and coaches practice and compete.  Our coaching staff is working hard to maximize practice times, space, and transportation for over 450 spring athletes. A huge shout out to all of them for doing an outstanding job of caring for our student-athletes. We March On!

We have our first Track meet on Tuesday, March 20th. We have moved the start time to 3pm to get things started earlier rather than later. Both Cleveland and Franklin have huge numbers, along with the Wilson Program. Coach Esbensen and his staff are doing a great job of creating an inclusive and positive Track culture. We are looking for volunteers to work the event on Tuesday.  If you have some free time and can help out or if you need community service hours for graduation, stop by and we will put you to work.

The Softball Program is off to a strong start to their season. They split this week with a win against Corvallis and came up short against a tough Tigard team. Coach Walmer’s squad is young but hungry to compete. They travel down to Sprague on Tuesday to take on the Olympians before they head off on their Spring Trip.

Coach Shetler and the Baseball Team is off to a strong start this year. The Varsity battled it out with David Douglas coming out on top 5-4 and took down St. Helens 13-3 on Thursday. The Freshmen Team defeated David Douglas and the JV swept a double-header with Neah-Kah-Nie on Saturday. They have two more games this week versus Newberg and Century before the Varsity and JV head off on their Spring Trip.  Coach Shetler and his staff continue to build a solid Baseball culture for their student-athletes.

The Women’s Tennis Program under new head coach, Barry Daigle, are having a great start to their year. They have taken on some quality Tennis Programs with wins over Mountainside and St. Marys. They came up short against Tualatin. Coach Daigle and his staff are doing a fantastic job of creating a positive, competitive, and fun culture for the program. The Trojans face the Grant Generals on Tuesday.

Men’s Tennis is marching right along under the direction of Coach Sussman. They are undefeated this season with wins over some solid Tennis Programs. Looking forward to watch them take on Grant on Tuesday in their first league test.

Women’s Lacrosse is battling it out this year under Coach Baker and her staff. They have faced off with Oregon City and Cleveland coming up just short in both efforts.  They took on Newberg on Saturday and came up victorious. If you haven’t had a chance to come out to a Women’s Lacrosse contest, I highly encourage it. They are fun and exciting! They face off with Grant on Thursday.

Men’s Lacrosse is off to a strong start beating Oregon City and Churchill. They play Camas and LaSalle this week. Again, like Women’s Lacrosse, if you haven’t been to one of their contests, I highly recommend it. Coach MacDicken and his crew do an outstanding job.

Finally, I can’t say enough about our Women’s and Men’s Golf Coaches. Coach Kolesar is doing an outstanding job of preparing her golfers and providing and inclusive and positive experience for her squad. Our new Men’s Golf Coach, Rick Widman, is doing outstanding as well. We March On!

A huge shout out to Noreena McCleave and Madalay More, the 2018 Three-Ball Backer Scholarship Winners. Two outstanding student-athletes who embody all that is great with Wilson High School.

The Wilson Women’s Golf Program is having a fundraiser at Red Tail Golf Course. This would be a great opportunity to get a group together and support Coach K and the Women’s Golf Program. Please visit the following site for more information.

Mark your calendar now for Tuesday May 29th at 7pm for our Wilson High School Athletics Year End Celebration. We will host it in the auditorium. Going to be a night to celebrate our student-athletes and coaches for all of their work this year.

Don’t forget to check out the Wilson High School Athletics Website for all things Wilson.

If you are looking for volunteer opportunities or to become a new member, the Wilson Booster Club is always looking for both. Visit the following link for more information.

Wilson Student Athletes of the Week-

Men’s Tennis-Senior Reid Wiley-Reid embodies all that is right with high school athletics. He has a 4.1 GPA, a member of the National Honor Society, a Scholar-Athlete, and is currently doing an internship through the ACE Program. He is a captain for his squad and according to Coach Sussman, is a serious State contender this year.
