Greetings Sports Fans!
We are a little over the half-way mark for our Winter Sports Programs and as they prepare for the final push of the regular season, we wanted to check in with each program. Below is what coaches had to say about the year so far.
Men’s Basketball-The Men's basketball program hasn't won as many games this season as we would like, but our players are competing well and growing together as a team. All three levels are working hard every day to get better and have bright futures ahead of them. With all but one senior returning, the Trojans should be much improved and should compete for one of the top spots in the PIL next season. As their coach, I couldn't be prouder of our players and coaches for their collective effort and their desire to move the Wilson Men's Basketball program to the next level.
Wrestling-The wrestling team is really starting to come into form. We won our first duel of the year, defeating Lincoln 54-12, and look good going into our final duel against Benson next Wednesday. We've got some very talented wrestlers in the middle weights where we look to make some noise at the district meet. With 113, 220, and 285 being the only holes in the lineup, we hope to put 2 wrestlers in almost every weight class at districts. Gus, Jack, Kamani, and potentially Ethan should get top seeds when it comes time to set up the brackets. On the girl's side, all wrestlers continue to learn a ton and make vast improvements in their wrestling. They should make some noise at the regional tournament, and we are hoping that we can get a couple girls to the state meet.
Women’s Basketball-The Women’s Basketball Program has been battling some injuries the entire season with some key players in the rotation battling one ailment or another. With that being said, the Varsity is sitting in 4th place in the PIL as we enter the second half of the season. The lower levels have been competing consistently and improving day in and day out as well. We couldn’t be more proud of the commitment, energy, and level of work ethic the entire program has exhibited so far this season.
Swimming-We have been having a wonderful season. It has been a super positive vibe and the swimmers are working really hard on their strokes. Our new swimmers have really put their all into training and being a part of the team.
Unified Basketball- The Unified Basketball Program continues to build an inclusive and positive experience for our student-athletes at Wilson. It is amazing to watch the team grow and compete year in and year out. They have a great group of returners this year with a mixture of newcomers to the squad this year.
With spring sports right around the corner, a couple of quick things. First, it is never too early to sign up for a spring sport, you can do that at www.familyid.com and the process is easy, especially if you already have an account set. Finally, spring coaches are utilizing the 6A rule of six hours per week of fundamental and program building. If you have any questions or are looking for schedules of workouts, please visit our website to reach out to the coaching staff. www.wilsonathletics.com
School Modernization Efforts
I am sure you are all aware that there are three schools that are still waiting to hear if the school board is going to put Cleveland, Jefferson, and Wilson on the 2020 Ballot for a bond proposal. As a community member, former teacher, and now serving as your Athletic Director, I cannot stress how important it is to make your voices heard regarding this issue. Write, email, or call our school board and let them know how important it is for the final three PPS Schools to be on the next ballot. Our community of students and athletes deserve a new facility!
The WHS Dance Team
This team is about teaching not only dance but also long-term memory, timing, spatial awareness and fun. Traffic is a planned execution. Choreography, your own moves, your songs and more. Join us in performance and competition for the year 2020! We are hoping to perform and compete in 2020. You are welcome to tryout. We are looking for an array of talents as that is what will hold our team together. Kyleigh Elliot, Berkeley Woodbury, Paige Nelson, and Kelly Jeffcock have been the proud founders of the team in 2019. We will hold additional tryouts on May 1st.
Questions to Ponder
The following link has some pretty powerful questions to ponder that I think fit into our discussion as an athletic department when it comes to character and leadership. One that stands out, Is this in my control? It ties into that saying that we as coaches always try to re-inforce, control the controllables! https://thoughtcatalog.com/ryan-holiday/2017/09/12-questions-that-will-change-your-life/
