“Sports build good habits, confidence, and discipline. They make players into community leaders and teach them how to strive for a goal, handle mistakes, and cherish growth opportunities.”-Julie Foudy

Greetings Sports Fans!

The quote above is such a great reflection of how wonderful our community is to be a part of! As I get around to see our Sports Programs in action in our community, it is so awesome to see all of our youth programs as well. Parents, volunteers, and community members all working together to provide positive and fun experiences for ALL of our student-athletes in our community at every level. We March On!

Speaking of community in action, on May 19th, Wilson High School will be hosting the Compassion Clinic. At this event, there will be opportunities for families in need to get much needed medical, dental, vison, and care support. For more information please visit their website and if you would like to volunteer, they are always looking for translators and hosts to help out.

Portland Interscholastic League Foundation Golf Tournament
The purpose of the Portland Interscholastic League Foundation (PILF) is to generate resources to support athletics and our serve students enrolled in the Portland Public School (PPS) district. One in three PPS students, grade 6-12, participate in PIL athletic programming. Over the past five years, the PIL has grown from providing opportunities for 5,500 student-athletes to providing opportunities for over 13,000 student-athletes. The largest growth areas have been the increased participation of female student athletes and increased opportunities for lower income students as we seek to decrease the inequities that exist. The mission of the PILF is to continue to generate funds in order to support the ever increasing participation of students in athletics.

One of their major fundraisers in the PIL Golf Tournament at the Reserve on June 12th. To register for the event or ways to support, please visit the following site-

A message from the Booster Club
Volunteer for concessions today! The Wilson Booster Club manages concession sales at games. All profits are returned to Wilson clubs and sports. In order to offer concessions, volunteers are needed to prepare and sell hot dogs, popcorn, etc. Sign up to help today at No experience necessary! If you are new to concession volunteering you'll be trained when you arrive. This is a fun way to give back to the Wilson community.

Wilson Athletics
Our Softball Program is off to a great start to the first half of league play! They are currently riding a five game winning streak and sit alone atop the league with a huge game against Roosevelt this Tuesday. During this span, they have come from behind against Lincoln on a rain game delay down by five runs and came back to win in the 7th inning. And at the PIL Showcase on Saturday, they dispatched the Franklin Quakers 6-1 to improve to 7-2 in league play.

The Baseball Program is continuing to make a statement in league play as well as they are currently enjoying a five game winning streak as well. They too have a big week of league play as they face Roosevelt and then two important series with Lincoln and Grant. Tavares Tims had a great week this past week pitching a 3-hitter against Franklin, while knocking in 4 RBI’s, scoring 4 runs, and was awarded Athlete of the Week for the Portland Tribune.

The Men’s Golf Program continues to improve week in and week out in a very competitive PIL. They scored their first victory of the season at East Moreland this past week after coming in second the past matches. A huge win for the program! They are at Rose City and Heron Lakes this week. A huge shout out to Rick Widman, a Wilson Grad by the way, for this continued efforts in ensuring the Program has a fun and exciting season.

On the women’s side, Coach K the Women’s Golf Program continue to build upon the success of last season as they march through league play. They have a big this week as well traveling to East Moreland this week with a JV Tournament on Monday. Can’t say enough about the work that Coach K and the staff are doing to provide a great experience for the program.

The Women’s Tennis Team continues to improve week in and week out. They faced off with a very competitive Lincoln Program and came up short in their efforts but improved from their score from last year. They then went out to beat Cleveland, Madison, and Roosevelt in decisive fashion. They have a big week coming up with Grant tomorrow, Benson on Tuesday, and Southridge on Wednesday as they prepare for the upcoming District Matches.

Our Men’s Tennis Team is looking to improve upon their successes from last year as well. They too had a very competitive match against Lincoln improving from last year and had a great showing at the Jesuit Invitational as well. With final matches with Grant and Benson, and OES this week, they are looking to march into Districts and improve upon their showing from last year where they did an outstanding job of representing Wilson!

The Track Program continues to improve week in and week out. The JV Program had a solid performance this past week with a number of kids posting solid numbers. At the McMinnville Invitational on Saturday, the Women finished in 2nd place while the Men finished 4th. The Wilson Women went 1,2,3 in the 3000m, while Giuliano Scasso posted solid times in the 1500 and 3k. According to the Coach Esbensen, “The Wilson Track Team is having a great year as we enter Championship Season. Great marks from seniors like Keating Hinkley and Olivia Worley and great futures from rising elites Giuliano Scasso, Nolan Malcombson and Makenna Moragne.”

The Women’s Lacrosse Program is having a great year with an overall record of 7-4. Coach Burke and the program states that “Most notable is the win at Sisters. Wilson trailed 15-9 with six minutes to go but Claire Haats, Hyland Cullen Musengo and team defense lead a rally and we won 16-15 in overtime. They will face off with Central Catholic and Newberg this week.

Our Men’s Lacrosse Program is sitting at 5-3 and battling it out with some very tough opponents. They play perennial powerhouse OES and Central Catholic this week.
