Greetings Sports Fans!
What a great week this past week at Wilson High School! Our Spring Sports Programs has a great week of weather in their first contests of the year, thankfully! The Leadership Class did a great job for Spirit Week and it all culminated with a fun assembly that was highlighted with a Unified Basketball Game with members of the staff, recognizing the new Wilson Hall of Fame Members, and a pie eating contest! Great things continue to happen at Wilson High School! We March On!
The Wilson Athletic Leadership Council will be meeting this Friday to discuss our efforts around community outreach. Our goal is to come up with two tangible goals of reaching out to our feeder schools to promote Wilson Athletics and a community improvement project. A great group of kids to work with!
I would like to thank the members of the Wilson Hall of Fame Committee for all of their help and support to continue the tradition of recognizing former Wilson Athletes and Coaches. Carrying on this tradition is an important facet of our great community and a huge thanks to Leanne Van Horn for putting together a great reception for our 2019 Inductees! We March On!
A message from the Booster Club:
Volunteer for concessions today! The Wilson Booster Club manages concession sales at games. All profits are returned to Wilson clubs and sports. In order to offer concessions, volunteers are needed to prepare and sell hot dogs, popcorn, etc. Sign up to help today at http://signup.com/go/VJ19f3. No experience necessary! If you are new to concession volunteering you'll be trained when you arrive. This is a fun way to give back to the Wilson community.
The Week in Review:
The Women’s Lacrosse Program kicked off the year in impressive fashion taking down Cleveland on Monday night at Wilson. The program then faced off against perennial powerhouse St. Mary’s and came up just short losing in the final moments of the contest. A great start under their new head coach. Excited to see the program continue to grow! They will battle Summit and Southride this week.
The Baseball Program was able to start their 2019 Season off without any weather delays this week when they traveled to Lake Oswego for a Jamboree to kick off the season. The Varsity had a strong showing in their first outing according to Coach Shetler. We hosted Beaverton on Wednesday but couldn’t get the sticks going in a losing effort. On Friday, the program traveled to Silverton to take on the Foxes and the Varsity lost a tough one in 8 innings. Can’t thank Coach Shetler and his staff for continuing to provide a positive program and his continued investment in the development of the youth program as well!
Our Softball Program is off and running as well. We hosted two teams on Monday for a Jamboree and then faced off with Liberty this week. The Varsity lost a tough one while the JV Team won 20-10. The Program returns a core group from last year and looks poised to make some noise this year. According to Coach, “we have a tremendous group of student-athletes that have worked extremely hard during the off season. With the exception of one position, we return all of our starters from last year. We are looking forward to an outstanding season with the nicest bunch of kids I have ever coached!”
Men’s Tennis had an outstanding week kicking off their season at West Linn and Wilsonville this week. The squad lost a tough one against a good West Linn Program and then bounced back with a convincing win against Wilsonville on Friday. The team returns a great core from last years’ run and is poised to have a successful year again for the 2019 season. Coach Sussman continues to provide a positive and fun experience for his program.
The Women’s Tennis Program had quite and opening week this week facing off with some of the best in the state to start the season. The program battled Sunset, West Linn, and Wilsonville this past week and the program had some excellent matches against really good competition. They will compete against Mountainside and Southridge this week. Coach Daigle and his staff continue to build an inclusive and competitive program.
Women’s Golf had a strong showing for the start of their 2019 Season. They kicked off the season at the Tigard-Tualatin showcase and according to Coach K, our Varsity squad came ready to play at the Tigard Tualatin Showcase, placing 6th out of the 12 top teams in the state. We were led by strong performances from Jessica Ewton, Mackenzie Titus, and freshman Jalissa Kabalican.
The Men’s Golf Program is off to a great start with a core group of returners and some up and comers as well. They are still in the pre-season with their first counting tournament on April 4th. Coach Widman had this to say about this years’ group, “the team looks great with a solid group of golfers throughout the program. The Varsity is strong and is looking forward to competing for a PIL Championship.”
The Men’s Lacrosse Program is looking to build upon the success from last year with a strong group of returners. They traveled to take on perennial power Ridgeview for their first contest of the season. They battled hard but came up short in their efforts. Coach MacDicken and his staff are excited about the prospects of this season. They will take on Camas this week.
